Comparable or not, what did you cross shop? Or wish you would’ve cross shopped?
I bought a 2016 Mazda6 i Touring in October 2015. I love it, but that’s because it’s not like most other sedans in its category.
Really, the only other car I’d have considered is/was a 2016 Honda Accord Sport. Those wheels, though.
I’d have to invest in some wheel locks. That’s for sure.
I’m glad I bought my 6 but there are fleeting moments where I sort of wish I’d have given the Accord more thought. It does have a CVT, though. Meh. And I don’t think you can get the Sport model with a sunroof.
How about you, Oppo? What did you consider but not buy?

When it was time to replace my first car I was looking at an RSX Type S, but it sold. So I got another Prelude.

I test drove a Gen 2 Chevy Volt, and hated it. The power delivery was far more entertaining than my Prius, but I actually preferred the Prius’s suspension setup and steering by far. And, the interior ergonomics and outward visibility on the Volt didn’t work for me.
Other things I considered, but didn’t test drive due to lack of existence, were the Prius Prime (which is actually what made me actually consider the Gen 4 Prius that I bought) and the Tesla Model 3. Oh, and the ND Miata, but I felt it was a bit silly to buy a new car as a weekend car when I’ve got a decent NB.

I cross shopped the Camaro, but couldn’t get the features I wanted for under my psychologically imposed budget. I also briefly considered a Mustang, maybe putting an aftermarket leather kit into a V6, but my experiences with Ford’s aluminum problems ruled it out quickly. I also at least checked out the 370Z, but that wasn’t under serious consideration.

A few years back my 93 Accord broke down on the highway. Got it towed to a repair shop that shares parking spaces with a shopping center. Parked two spots away from their designated area and was towed to an impound lot. Instead of really shopping ended up with a brand new 2013 Civic when I could have gotten a G8 with low mile. White exterior, red leather interior.

Hard to say but I was really drawn towards the 318ti even still. Ultimately the local scarcity of a manual in good condition, and the premium for it, pushed me towards the usual suspects for now.

Thought about a C63, but lacking a stick, it was a non-starter. Also where is the hood ornament, that’s like 80% of the reason I want a Benz.

When my A6 died, I needed a new car right away. I didn’t cross-shop at all and ended up with a huge impulse buy that I regretted the week after getting it. A 2016 Jetta.
I could have bought a 2016 Tacoma TRD Offroad.....

I saw a Legacy 2.5 GT wagon for sale for $5k a few years ago. Really wanted it, but instead, I got nothing (and still have nothing) and my wallet is much happier because of it.

Looked at the M2 and loved it. Every time the M3 breaks down or needs maintenance I really wish I had just bought the modern car.
I really just wanted a brand new 2016 E46 M3. If BMW had that, I’d be a customer for all of the family vehicles.

I cross shopped my car with every single other sub $8000 car I could find. So the correct answer to your question is, I have no idea. two of the last cars I looked at before buying mine were a 1995 Land Cruiser and a 1972 Cadillac Fleetwood.

I was very close to a 2013 Mazda6 Sport 6MT that sold before I could make up my mind, a 2013 CC 2.0T 6MT that I couldn’t quite get the dealer to the price that I wanted, a 2012 GLI that sold while I was getting my financing in order, and brand new GSW 5MT that I didn’t qualify for all the rebates on. Then out of nowhere a certified pre-owned 2014 Forester 6MT had a price drop from $18,999 to $16,499 and I ran as fast as I could to grab it.

What you’re saying is you got your car towed to a shop when it broke down, but they parked it in a tow-away zone in the same lot and your car was impounded? That’s just shitty.

I cross shopped a lot of Volvos before I brought the Forester home. I didn’t really feel like I needed 4wd or wanted to deal with the extra complications that comes with it.
My mechanic said the local Volvo guy was a real prick and a pretty crappy mechanic so I’d be rolling the dice with him on anything major.
The place where I got Forest has a great reputation and my mechanic approved Forest and the dealership.
Actually I really tried to buy a nice Taurus wagon that he also talked me out of.

After going for my 328i, I saw a few regrets:
-
2004 330i ZHP with only 145k kms for $10995
- Various 2012,3 320i for $5k less, but has the split fold seats, by far my biggest peeve for not checking that out
- A 2014 ATS 2.0T in the EXACT colour combo I wanted in the first place (black + red) and a whole whack of more toys (Nav, BT streaming), for the same price as my 328i
HFV has no HFV. But somehow has 2 motorcycles

For my car Maybe an E30, I tired to buy one but it sold before I got to.
For my wife’s car IDK I can’t imagine a car that fits our life as well as a Fit, it was the right price,my wife loves the way it looks and now that we have a kid it’s the perfect size fit our little family. My only complaint is it’s really gutless and the seats aren’t very comfortable for long distances. Maybe a Kia Soul.

I shopped the Colorado/Canyon twins, and a Challenger ScatPack when I got my Tacoma. Had I been forced to not by my Taco, I bet I would’ve bought another Tundra. The only reason I would not bought mine was if it was too small.

I just put a deposit down on a MY17 Fiesta ST build. This is the first actual “my car” purchase in about 15 years as I have been driving my wife’s car, long story...anyway
I was cross shopping the Toyobru twins but what really did those in were the tiny backseats. After living with a coupe for the past few years doing the school drop off and pick ups with our 2 kids, the 4 doors of the FiST is really appealing. Plus, the Toyota is just ruined with that hideous new front end. The BRZ spec’ed the way I wanted would come out to about 5 to 6k more. Plus I like idea of being able to tune the factory turbo of the FiST. I will be missing out on the RWD goodness but it seems like the most appropriate choice.
I considered spending a lot more money on a Focus RS or STI but decided to be more fiscally responsible in my daily. That way maybe I can rationalize a project car down the road.

I didn’t really cross shop my DD when I bought it 4 years ago, I knew what I wanted. But these were the two distant contenders:
I do not regret picking the Peugeot, although I do slightly regret not getting the bigger motor.

Hmm, lets see... I bought a ‘74 Stingray, and the other contenders were:
Mitsubishi 3000GT VR4
Toyota MR2 SW20
Mk IV Supra
Early 2000s Lotus Elise
C5 Z06 Corvette
Early 2000s Porsche Cayman / Boxster
Datsun 240Z / 260Z
Acura NSX - JK I couldn’t actually afford this
BMW 535i
BMW 850CSi - JK, I couldn’t afford a decent one
Opel GT
Jaguar XJS - I’m still considering getting one as a third car

When I bought my first new vehicle, my ‘06 Sierra crew cab, I was 25 and single. I just wanted something new and under $20k (I had just gotten BAAAAAADLY burned on a CPO ‘04 GTO, so new was a must). I darn near bought a regular cab 4x4 Colorado for $18k, but even by my low standards it rode terribly. I then had a regular cab RWD short bed Sierra all picked out for $19k. We were about to head inside to sign the papers when the salesman took one more look around to see what else they had. Next to the road there was a pair of RWD crew cab 1500 Sierras that had been marked down to $21k. Yeah, it was a grand over budget, and I sure as shit didn’t need a back seat at the time, but $2k more for an entire back seat and two more doors made it a no-brainer. Now 10-1/2 years later, the truck has been reliable as could be and hauls my family around with ease and comfort. Not to mention the countless time I’ve done truck stuff with it.
